Coming from the hallowed "praises" of Assassin's Creed III, the game franchise reinvented itself, plunging the player to the vast corners of the sea. A welcomed breath of fresh air, players were imbued with the sense of naval exploration and action to boot.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
Ubisoft Montreal
Vanillaware does what it does best: Great 2d hack-and-slash games. Tight gameplay, varied characters, the beautiful sprite work you come to expect from them, and even cross-console co-op, for the three people that own a Vita. Plus it pissed off a certain crowd, so that's always a plus.
Dragon's Crown
Vanillaware and Atlus
Suffice it to say nobody was expecting Far Cry 3's expansion pack to be anything like this. The most painstakingly faithful recreation of a brainless 80s action movie ever, with gameplay solid enough to launch it with rocket boots from "novelty" to "classic."
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Shanghai
A Fire Emblem entry that actually made it to America, the series was promising to focus on party interaction more than any previous games. Not only did it deliver this exponentially, but the game continues to receive content through DLC missions, and online multiplayer.
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Intelligent Systems
GTA returns to proper form with a huge sandbox, biting satire on every aspect of American culture, and six different games' worth of mechanics, blended together seamlessly. And no cousin to ask you to go bowling, either.
Grand Theft Auto V
Rockstar North
Who would have thought the key to making Raiden cool was to make him the star of a Devil May Cry game? Platinum does what they do best, and throw in kick-ass music and great bosses while they're at it.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Platinum Games
4A Games craft a bold and brutal tale that moves with tighter controls and improving on many of Metro's strengths. The atmosphere and gameplay are all brimming with richness. This grouped with its spectacular stealth elements make Metro: Last Light an astonishing shooter.
Metro: Last Light
4A Games
One of the rare games with a message that remembers to be fun, Papers, Please manages to turn the dullest concept ever into loads of fun with a heartbreaking story to boot. Take note. This is how you do moral choices.
Papers, Please
Lucas Pope
Game Freak brings the franchise into the third dimension. A whole new world, new Pokémon, fine-tuned mechanics, a new Fairy type, and it lets us play with our lovable creatures at last. It has an all-around je ne sais quoi to it, the belle époque of Pokémon.
Pokémon X and Y
Game Freak
For its few faults, it's still better than another NSMB game. Besides that, co-op is even better in 3D and the level design sets a new standard for platformers. Did I mention you can play as Rosalina?
Super Mario 3D World
Nintendo EAD Tokyo and 1-UP Studio
The Last of Us, though in its deafening cacophonous praise, showed that it's deserving of it, bringing volumes of powerful moments of storytelling, emotion filled drama, and cementing itself as a definitive reason to own a PlayStation 3.
The Last of Us
Naughty Dog
Advertised as "A Link to the Past 2," A Link Between Worlds features entertaining mechanics, a new item rental system that allows non-linear progression, a great cast of characters, and possibly the most original Zelda story in a long, long time.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Nintendo EAD and Monolith Soft
While Metal Gear Rising leads up the ISO-9000 standard Platinum Games CUHRAYZEE action game, The Wonderful 101 is busy proving there's more to that genre than hack-and-slash; with a lower point of entry but a higher skill ceiling than any other Platinum release.
The Wonderful 101
